MEALY BUG TREATMENT

Mealy Bugs are another one of those garden insects that will attach itself to the plant and suck the nutrients from it. Mealy Bugs are very similar to scale but without the hard shell. A Mealybug treatment is most effective if done with a systemic insecticide. In most cases this is possible without damaging the plant. However, if there is an infestation of Mealy Bugs in a plant that produces food you would need a different approach.

Mealy Bugs will attack many different kinds of foliage from Golden Mounds to Coconut Palms. You will often find mealy bugs infections in hibiscus plants and Foxtail Palms or Citrus trees. If there is an ant colony near by the mealy bugs will thrive. Mealy bugs produce a sappy kind of honey dew that the ants feed on. Ants will protect the mealy bugs from natural predators and the mealy bug population will increase.

There are organic materials available for mealy bug treatments. In most cases you can use topical treatments of soapy water to wash them away. In more severe cases neem oil might be a help. When all else fails your professional pest control company will have the answer. We use a systemic product that is also derived from the neem plant that can be injected into a tree truck that is at least 3 inches in diameter. This product can also be used as an organic systemic root drench.
